ABSTRACT
Objective: To associate the presence of falls with certain risk factors and with health-related Quality of life (QOL).
Material and methods: We conducted a case-control study based on the diagnosis of falls in older adults at a family medicine clinic in Mexico City. The Quality of Life Questionnaire (QLQ), the Nottingham Health Profile (NHP), and the Hendrich II Fall Risk model were administered. Statistical tests included Odds ratio (OR) with 95% Confidence interval (95% CI). and the χ2 and Mann-Whitney tests.
Results: A total of 45 cases and 105 controls were included. We observed differences between diagnosis of falls and obesity, and with the risk model (p ‹0.05), as well as among diagnoses of falls and NHP dimensions, except for dreams.
Conclusions: Health-related QOL is seriously affected after one or more episodes of falls, in that these affect compromised areas, such as the patient’s physical and mental functioning.
