ABSTRACT
Objective: To determine the attitudes and motivations of the patient with diabetes and health personnel regarding type 2diabetes mellitus (DM2).
Materials and Methods: Prospective comparative survey utilizing a non-random sample comprising 202 patients and 30 health personnel. The instrument was administered was the DAS- 3 (Diabetes Attitude Scale), a questionnaire of 33 questions that has been internationally validated to assess the attitudes and motivations of patients with DM2.
Results: The health professionals placed greater value onstricter control of the disease, while patients assigned greater importance to items concerning psychosocial impact and autonomy. Both groups perceived the disease as serious and agree on the need for special training for health professionals.
Conclusions: It is important to evaluate not only the knowledge health personnel and patients have on diabetes, but also the impact of this disease on the patient As long as differences persist in attitudes between health personnel and patients, it will be more difficult to effect adequate control.
