ABSTRACT
Objective: To identify the causes of non-acceptance of family planning methods in women that is ongoing during puerperal care.
Material and Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted from June to October, 2004. This included women who were randomized at midpuerperium who did not accept birth-control methods.
Variables: Age; civil status; schooling; occupation; religion; number of pregnancies; number of childbirths; number of cesarean sections; number of abortions; satisfactory parity; known birth-control methods; use of birth control and type; side effects; source of information, and causes of non-acceptance.
Analysis of results: Central trend measurements; variance, and percentages.
Results: We interviewed 61 puerperium patients aged between 17 and 37 years.
Main causes: Myths and rumors (36.1%); fear of side effects (19.7%); religion (14.8%), and lack of approval by the couple (11.5%).
Conclusions: Although a great percentage of patients in puerperium receive advice on birth control from the health team, we observed ignorance or a more extensive credibility in non-scientific information. Thus, we recommend analysis of the causes of non-acceptance, and the elaboration and implementation of working strategies to diminish the latter and to clarify doubts in the population.
