ABSTRACT
Chagas disease or American trypanosomiasis is a zoonosis caused by
Trypanosoma cruzi.
OBJECTIVE. To determine the seroprevalence of antibodies to Chagas disease and some risk factors associated with this condition in Tamazunchale, San Luis Potosí.
MATERIAL AND METHODS. We performed a transversal study from March, 1997 to January, 1998 in the Hospital Rural Solidaridad No. 44, of Zacatipan in Tamazunchale, San Luis Potosí. The subjects were selected randomly from both sexes and older than five years of age. The antibodies determination by indirect hemagglutination test was performed in the Parasitology Laboratory of the National Institute of Epidemiological Reference of Secretariat of Health of Mexico.
The statistical analysis were made by Frequencies, Proportions,
T. cruzi Antibodies Prevalence, Odds ratio and logistic regression analysis.
RESULTS. We studied 734 participants, 434 (59.1%) were female and 300 (40.9%) males, mean age was 30.8 years. The seroprevalence found was 6.3% (n = 46). The average age among seropositives was 31.6 years with a higher prevalence in females (60.9%) and the age group of 30 to 44 years (7.0%).
DISCUSSION. The seroprevalence observed for
T. cruzi was 6.3% being higher than the seroprevalence national (1.6%) and the seroprevalence previously report for the state of San Luis Potosi (2.5%).
