ABSTRACT
Chickenpox is a benign disease in immunocompetent patients. Only about 5 to 10% have some complication.
OBJECTIVE. To describe frequency, clinical characteristics and bacterial agents in children with skin and soft tissue infections and chickenpox.
PATIENTS AND METHODS. Children attended in a tertiary care pediatric hospital from January 2003 to August 2007 with chicken pox complications were included. Information was obtained from clinical charts. Results were expressed with descriptive statistics.
RESULTS. There were included 48 patients with chickenpox and some complication, 22 had a skin and soft tissue infection. Median age was 5.5 years old, 70% of patients were males, 60% were healthy children. Cellulitis (55%) was the most frequent complication, another infections were impetigo, abscess and necrotizing fasciitis. One child died.
Staphylococcus aureus was the most common bacterial agent isolated.
CONCLUSION. 46% of hospitalized children with chickenpox had a skin and soft tissue infection, some of them with a serious disease that required intensive care management. Chickenpox is not a truly benign disease.
