Mollicutes isolated in pharyngeal and urogenital tract

ABSTRACT

Objective. To know the isolations percentage of mollicutes in pharyngeal and urogenital tract in a population of patients from Puebla city, Mexico.
Material and methods. During the period of November 2007 to May 2008, 291 samples were obtained from different anatomic sites (vagina, vulva, urethra and pharyngeal) in a population of patients from Puebla city. The samples were processed in specific mollicutes broth. Agar samples were monitored by stereoscopic microscopy in order to corroborate the characteristic growth of mollicutes.
Results. From the 291 samples, 188 (64.6%) were positive to mycoplasmas and ureaplasmas. From these 188 samples, 55 (29.25%) were positive to mycoplasmas, 53 (28.19%) positive to ureaplasmas and for both mollicutes 80 (42.5%) were positive.
Conclusion. The percentage of obtained isolations of mollicutes corroborates with the data referred by other authors, which suggests the convenience to consider its diagnosis of routine, due to their widely documented participation in diverse sufferings as aetiologic agents.
