ABSTRACT
Background. The pathogenic mechanism of cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection is not completely know. Recent advances revealed that an excess in production of oxygen free radicals that characterizes an oxidative stress is developed during a viral infection.
Objective. To determine the seric levels of malondialdehyde, total glutathione and total antioxidant status as indicators of an oxidative stress in subjets with seric IgM positive for CMV.
Material and methods. Serum samples were analyzed from subjects with IgM positive for CMV. Malondi-aldehyde, total glutathion and total antioxidant status were determined by spectrophotometric methods. Serum samples from healthy subjects with a negative IgM for CMV were used as controls.
Results. Ours results show that in the subjects with IgM positive for CMV present an increase in total antixidant status in comparison with the control group (1.929 ± 0.02
vs. 1.803 ± 0.05 p ‹ 0.05; respectively). Also, the subjects with IgM positive for CMV show an increase in both MDA (183.75%) and total glutathione (26.17%) levels with respect to control subjects.
Conclusions. The changes in all oxidative metabolites show that an oxidative stress is developed in the subjects with high levels of seric IgM specific for CMV. Also, oxidative stress is more important in children that in adults during an infection caused by CMV.
