ABSTRACT
Empirical antimicrobial treatment is common when clinician suspected newborn sepsis, excessive prescription occurs in neonatal intensive care units (NICU). We analyze the antimicrobial prescriptions in different NICU.
Material and methods. A transversal study was done in nine NICU from 6 General Hospitals. All hospitalized newborns were included.
Results. 73 patients were included, 73.9% received antibiotics, from them 72.1 were prophylactic. In those patients who received antibiotics 54% were cultured and in only 16% cultures were positives.
Conclusion. a high prevalence of antimicrobial prescription was found. The prophylactic use was the principal indication. In a very low frequency cultures were indicated. Is necessary a better microbiologic findings and antimicrobial use.
