ABSTRACT
This review provides an update on the pathogenesis and histopathological diagnosis of neuroendocrine tumors of the gastrointestinal tract. The tumors of the diffuse neuroendocrine system are a group of neoplasms sharing uniformly appearing cells which differ from each other in their biology, prognosis and genetics. In the gastrointestinal compartment they are classified as well differentiated neuroendocrine tumors or carcinomas and poorly differentiated neuroendocrine carcinomas. On the other hand, pancreatic endocrine tumors are relatively rare, comprising only about 1-2% of pancreatic tumors and the vast majority of them are well differentiated tumors.
