ABSTRACT
Epidemic typhus produced by Rickettsia prowasekii in our country has been linked to lice and tick infestation in indigenous population at center and south Mexico. We didn’t have reports in Jalisco of epidemic typhus since 1999.Case characteristics: We are reporting a clinical case of male child seven years old. He became ill with fever, confusion, petechias and hemorrhagic conjunctivitis, he had exposition to cows infested with lice and tick, his father was diagnosed with typhoid fever some days before. The Weil-Felix test which relies upon cross reaction with the Proteus OX-19 and OX-2 antigens was the suspicions for epidemic typhus and Rickettsia prowazekii serology was positive.
Conclusions Epidemic typhus must be evaluated in exposed population to vectors of zoonoses, because we didn’t know the real frequency in our media and should be considered as a re emergent infectious disease.
