ABSTRACT
Approximately 5-10% of all pregnancies are complicated by premature rupture of membranes (PROM), 60% of which occur at term. Management is usually expectant because of risk of preterm birth usually outweigh risk of infection. The management of PROM occurring prior to fetal viability is a controversial topic in obstetrics. Issues such as the use of prophylactic antibiotics, tocolytic therapy, or corticosteroids, the role of fetal lung maturity testing, optimal antenatal surveillance strategy, and immediate delivery versus expectant management in the setting of PROM remain areas of debate. We present the case of a woman with a pregnancy of 15.3 weeks of gestation with preterm premature rupture of membranes with a resolution of pregnancy at 38.3 weeks of gestation without complications in the Centro Medico ABC and the management of this patient.
