Current tocolytic agents for management of preterm labor

ABSTRACT

Tocolytic agents are drugs directed to inhibit contractions of myometrial smooth muscle cells. This review provides the tocolytic agents currently used to treat preterm labor and the evidence of their role in clinical practice. These include are betamimetics, prostaglandin synthetase inhibitors, calcium channel blockers, oxytocin receptor antagonists and magnesium sulphate, all of them with certain side-effects, decisions regarding whether the use and choice of a tocolytic agent remains unclear and therefore, knowledge of these agents will help us make the proper decision.
