Etiologic characterization of aseptic meningoencephalitis in the province of Ciego de Ávila, Cuba

ABSTRACT

A prospective analysis was done to 198 patients with aseptic meningoencefalitis who were in the provincial hospital «Dr. Antonio Luaces Iraola of Ciego de Ávila, Cuba. Studies with paired serums to determine neutralizing antibodies to enterovirus, hemoaglutination test, viral neutralization for arbovirus, hemolysis for leptospira and virological study of feces searching enterovirus. An enterovirus was found as etiologic agent in a 36.8% of the patients. The leptospira was the second agent frequently found in 14.6%. The etiologic agent was determined in the 51.4% studied sampler.
