ABSTRACT
Several studies have reported the existence of depression and anxiety in caregivers associated with different sociodemographic variables and caregivers´ individual psychological characteristics. There are no reports about this association in neurodegenerative disease patients´ caregivers.
Objective: To identify demographic and care-related variables associated with high depression and anxiety levels in caregivers of patients with neurodegenerative diseases.
Materials and methods: The sample consisted of 125 caregivers of patients with neurodegenerative diseases who attend to the different Support Groups from the National Institute of Neurology and Neurosurgery Manuel Velasco Suárez. A demographic data questionnaire was used. Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) were used for measuring depression and anxiety levels in caregivers.
Results: it was found that women presented higher anxiety (p‹ 0.05) and depression (p‹ 0.05) levels than men. Caregivers with less educational level showed more anxiety (p‹ 0.01) and depression (p‹ 0.01) than people with higher level. It was found that caregiver parents have higher anxiety (p‹ 0.05) and depression (p ‹ 0.01) compared with other relatives.
Conclusions: our results match up with previous studies, in which gender, educational level, and relationship seem to be important variables associated with anxiety and depression in caregivers of patients with neurodegenerative diseases.
