ABSTRACT
Neurocysticercosis (NCC) is the most common infection of the human nervous system by the larval stage of the tapeworm
taenia solium. It is the most common helminthic infection of the nervous system and is endemic in Latin America (including Mexico), Asia and Africa, as well as in industrialized nations with a high immigrant influx of people coming from endemic areas. It is a public health problem. The diagnosis is not possible on clinical grounds, it is necessary the practice of complementary tests in every suspected case, since the diagnosis require proper interpretation of clinical, neuroimaging, and serologic data, in the correct epidemiological context Chiapas have been reported to have a high prevalence of NCC which makes it a health issue for the State, for this reason it is important to monitor, diagnose and treat this disease. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of NCC in a patient population from the Hospital in Tapachula, Chiapas. A descriptive and retrospective analysis was made through revision of archived clinical records during the period of March 2006 to April 2009. A total of 638 patients were referred to the neurology service, of which 13 were diagnosed with NCC, representing a prevalence of 2.03%, which is considerably low compared with other reported studies in Mexico. It is important to strengthen ties with the first and second levels of care for a proper diagnosis of NCC.
