Epidemiology of chronic pain in Mexico

ABSTRACT

According to some authors, chronic pain is public health problem. This worldwide problem affects from 25 to 29% of the general population, however some reports had reported a prevalence range from 8 to 80%. Those discrepancies are due to methodological controversies regarding the definition of chronicity. In the United States, 17% of the patients with chronic pain are attended in by primary care physicians. We do not have this information in Mexico, nonetheless in the «Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social» (National Institute for Social Security), the 5% of the patients attended in the primary care setting had a chronic painful condition. The aim of this work is to identify by means of national casuistic those epidemiological elements regarding the prevalence of chronic pain in Mexico.
