ABSTRACT
We compared the performance of the IMAGN 2000 System (Biometric Imagin Co)
volumetric capillary cytometry method which provides absolute enumeration of CD4+ and CD8+ lymphocytes counts with a flow cytometry method Coulter Epics Profile II (Coulter Co)
in 29 AIDS patients specimens that were tested by both methods.
This evaluation demonstrated that the Imagn 2000 system provides CD4+ and CD8+ counts in AIDS patients comparable to flow cytometry in terms of accuracy and reproducibility; and the advantages of fully automated operation, easy use, simple instrumentation, lack of a requirement for highly trained personnel or additional hematology equipment and suggests that the volumetric capillary cytometry offers a practical alternative to flow cytometry for the determination of absolute CD4+ and CD8+ T cell counts in HIV infected persons. This technology may be particularly well suited for small laboratories, clinics and hospitals that not currently performing flow cytometry.
