ABSTRACT
The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of birth defects and genetic diseases in infancy as a health problem with respect to hospital care. We reviewed related articles from 1970 to 2007, from which 21 fulfill inclusion criteria. We conclude that genetic diseases and birth defects represent 40 to 50 percent of all admissions to pediatric centers and this number increases because of repeated hospitalizations of these patients. Birth defects and genetic diseases represent a public health problem related to epidemiologic transition. Further studies are needed to understand their implications in the future of health care system, the appropriate use of available resources, strategies, prevention, education of human resources and research.
