ABSTRACT
Background: Study of lipid profi le in clinical practice includes measurement of total cholesterol, triglycerides, low density lipoproteins (LDL), high density lipoproteins (HDL) and very-low density lipoproteins (VLDL). In clinical laboratories, measurement LDL is calculated by the Friedewald Equation described in 1972; however, this formula has some limitations as in cases of hyperlipidemia secondary to renal diseases. This study was designed in order to evaluate the usefulness of calculation of LDL by a regression analysis equation, compared with the value obtained by the Friedewald formula and direct measurement by an automatic method.
Material and method: One hundred and forty-one blood samples were obtained from 25 children with hyperlipidemia secondary to renal disease, at beginning and during follow-up while under treatment for hyperlipidemia. Samples were analyzed by an automatic method to detect cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL and LDL. A linear regression analysis was performed considering values of LDL as an dependent variable and values of cholesterol, HDL and triglycerides as independent variables.
Results: With the regression model the following predictive equation was obtained: LDL = (0.917*Col) - (0.114*Trig) - (0.717*HDL) - 8.985. R2 was of 0.9642 with a high signifi cance of the model and the coeffi cients.
Conclusions: Calculation of LDL by this formula is useful in children with hyperlipidemia secondary to renal diseases.
