Antioxidant enzimes and malondialdehyde assessment in children serum with positive IgM for citomegalovirus

ABSTRACT
Background: Recent advances revealed that an excess in production of oxygen free radicals that characterizes an oxidative stress is development in subjects with a viral infection. The purpose of the present work is to determine in serum the activity of antioxidant enzymes and malondialdehyde (MDA) concentration as indicators of oxidative stress in childens that present in serum an IgM positive for CMV.
Material and methods: Serum samples from childrens that present levels of IgM that indicate an infection for CMV were selected. MDA and antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase and glutathion peroxidase were determined in serum by spectrophotometric methods. Serum samples from childrens with a negative IgM for CMV were used as controls.
Results: Our results show that in childrens with IgM positive for CMV present an increase up to 171.18% in MDA leves has compared with control group. Also, SOD activity decreased 21.89% in regard to control group. While catalase and glutathion peroxidase present an increse of 18.77% and 63.38% respectively, in regard to control subjects.
Conclusions: The changes in antioxidant enzymes and the increase in MDA levels are suggested of an oxidative stress is present in childrens with a cytomegalovirus infection. These oxidative stress can contribute to physiophatologyc process of cytomegalovirus infection.
