ABSTRACT
Introduction. It is estimated that between 2,500,000 and 4,000,000 cases of active child abuse occur in the United States annually and contemporary society recognizes child abuse as a serious medical and social problem. Injuries of the gastrointestinal tract in cases of child abuse have been documented since 1964.
Material and method. This review refers to our experience with nine battered children suffering intrabdominal visceral injuries treated in our hospital. Three of them had duodenal transection and three ileal rupture, the rest had duodenal, jejunal and colonic perforation.
Conclusion. Visceral complications due to battered child syndrome are a frequent and serious problem.
