ABSTRACT
Background: Clubfoot is one of the most common musculoskeletal malformations; the prevalence has been reported between 0.57 and 6.8 per 1,000 live births. The prevalence of clubfoot in Mexico was not previously studied. We sought to find out what is the prevalence of clubfoot in an urban Mexican population.
Methods: We performed a retrospective review of all consecutive births in a private medical center that provides health care to an open population and identified all cases of clubfoot. Confidence intervals were calculated and reported.
Results: The prevalence of clubfoot in the studied population was of 2.32 per 1,000 live births (CI
95%: 0.86 - 3.77).
Conclusions: This study adds valuable information to the epidemiology of clubfoot. Based upon the known birthrate in Mexico, we estimated that each year there are 5,600 new cases of clubfoot.
Level of evidence: II, prevalence study.
