ABSTRACT
Introduction: Ibuprofen is a non-steroid antinflamatory drug with good effect in adults. There is limited experience with children under 2 years old.
Objective: To compare the effect of ibuprofen against paracetamol in children under 2 years old.
Material and methods: It’s an experimental, non-blinded, prospective, longitudinal and comparative study in children less than 2 years old with fever. Group A received paracetamol and group B received ibuprofen, one dose 10mg/kg/day PO. We compared the temperatures of the children during 6 hours with interval of 30 minutes; we also compared bound ureic nitrogen, and creatinine at the beginning and the end of the same time.
Results: The initial temperatures for group A were 38.7±0.4 and for group B 38.7±0.3. The reduction of the fever was faster and lasted longer with ibuprofen. BUN and creatinine had no differences at the beginning and the end of study.
Conclusion: The Ibuprofen can be used in children under 2 years old for control of fever; its effect is faster and longer lasting than that of paracetamol.
