Suicide Attempts Frequency Seen in the Emergency Room

ABSTRACT
Objective: To acertain the frequency of patients with suicide attempts in the emergency room of Zone General Hospital 47 of the IMSS. Patients and Methods: We studied all patients who entered the emergency room diagnosed with suicide attempt by any method. We included the adult emergency room as well as the pediatric emergency room. We registered the kind of drug, the dosage, and the time between intake and the moment the patient attempting suicide entered the emergency room. We registered the clinical manifestations at time of entrance as well as the treatment used and outcome of intoxication and treatment. Study Design: cross-sectional. Results: Fifty nine patients who represented a percentage of 0.76. There were 49 women and 10 men with an average of 29.46 years of age. There were nine pediatric patients (15 years of age or less). Most patients were single, with high school level of education or less. The drugs used most were benzodiazepines. The cause of suicide attempts was depression following emotional problems with the partner. Most patients entered without symptoms or with general symptoms. There were no deaths and only four patients were sent to the intensive care unit. Conclusions: The frequency and profile found are very similar to what was expected, indicating that tendency of suicide attempts remains stable.REFERENCES
