Venous Thromboembolism in the Intensive Care Unit. An Unsolved Problem

ABSTRACT

The epidemiology and known risk factors for deep venous thrombosis and pulmonary embolism are reviewed. Specific risk factors for the critically-ill patient in the Intensive Care Unit are emphasized. The different strategies for the diagnosis and treatment of deep venous thrombosis and its most feared complication, pulmonary embolism, are discussed. We conclude that although adequate prophylaxis for venous thromboembolism in this subgroup of patients is possible, adequate risk factor stratification is not yet well defined.
