ABSTRACT
The streptococcus from the A group, or
Streptococcus pyogenes, is a gram-positive coccus and a facultative anaerobe. It is the causative agent of a great variety of diseases such as: scarlatine, faringitis, rheumatic fever, glomerulonephritis, neuropsychiatric disorders and necrotizing fasciitis. Along with Staphylococcus aureus,
Streptococcus pyogenes is responsible of most soft tissue infections. Out of the infections caused by
Streptococcus pyogenes, in 30% to 50% it produces invasive infection and can be complicated by the toxic shock syndrome.
