ABSTRACT
Background: Currently the organ and tissue transplantation is an effective alternative for the treatment of many patients. However there are many barriers such as social, psychological and religious, among others that prevent the process of organ donation. Worldwide surveys have yielded as major barriers, lack of information, followed by fear of mutilation.
Objective: To ascertain the views of users of clinical services (general population) and the nursing staff of the Hospital Angeles del Pedregal about organ donation.
Material and methods: We conducted a prospective, observational, descriptive, parallel group, by applying a non-validated survey on attitudes toward organ donation. We applied 200 survey to two populations of the Hospital Angeles del Pedregal.
Results: 90% (n 180) of the population surveyed would be willing to donate their organs or tissues after life. The median age was 35 years old and 74.5% were female. Of those willing to donate their organs 73% (n127) would also be willing to donate the organs of their relatives (p ‹ 0.0001). 60.6% considered the main obstacle the lack of information (p= 0.038).
Conclusion: The results generally suggest a good disposition to the donation, observing greater knowledge in the nursing group. Is required to make more widespread organ donation process to the entire population to improve their attitude and raise their awareness to this global problem.
