ABSTRACT
Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic, systemic, inflammatory disease, with an autoimmune origin, which frequently produces deformation and destruction of joints and is associated to physical disability and psychosocial morbidity. The early and aggressive treatment is decisive to avoid progression and destruction of joints. Biological drugs represent a very effective therapeutic option, with tolerable adverse effects. This group of drugs has demonstrated to reduce inflammation in an important manner, to inhibit radiographic progression and to induce remission. This paper reviews: pharmacokinetics, biological effects and the studies demonstrating efficacy and safety of biological agents indicated as monotherapy and combined treatment.
