ABSTRACT
Background: There are studies that demonstrate the usefulness of adjuvant drugs in the treatment of the alcohol withdrawal syndrome (AWS).
Objetive: To demonstrate the differences in the use of two adjuvant treatments.
Material and methods: We administrated to 42 patients with AWS standard treatment plus metoprolol (n=21) or propranolol (n=21) and we measured the trial variables at baseline, 48 and 72 h.
Results: There were no differences between groups in mean arterial blood pressure, temperature, heart rate at baseline (p› 0.05). At 48 h, there were differences in systolic blood pressure, mean arterial blood pressure and temperature (p‹ 0.005). At 72 h there were differences in the systolic, diastolic and mean arterial blood pressure (p‹ 0.05). There was difference in the heart rate in the metoprolol group (p=0.0007). In the propranolol group, we found differences in temperature (p=0.0031) and heart rate (p‹ 0.0001). When comparing within groups by severity of AWS, there were no differences at baseline, 48 and 72hs (p› 0.05). More than 90% of patients had severe AWS at baseline, decreasing at 48 y 72 h after the treatment.
Conclusions: There were no differences in systolic, diastolic and mean arterial blood pressure and heart beat. There were differences in temperature at 48hs but not at 72 h. There were no differences between groups for the Ciwa-Ar scale. There were differences within groups at 48 and 72 h.
