ABSTRACT
Objective: to identify prevalence, mechanisms, and severity of head trauma in children.
Methods: we reviewed medical records of all children with diagnosis of head trauma.
Results: we studied a total of 469 children. Prevalence rate of head trauma in 1995 was 42/1000 patients discharged; in 1996 it was 41.8/1000; in 1997, 44.7/1000; in 1998, 48.2/1000; in 1999, 52.9/1000; and during the first semester of 2000 it was 46.2/1000. The main mechanisms of head trauma were falling in 72 % (from a roof, from stairs, etc.) and car accidents in 20 %. The most frequent injury was skull fracture (33 %) followed by neurovegetative syndrome (11.5 %) and skull fracture plus subgaleal hematoma (4.7 %); 65 % were mild injuries, 22.8 % moderate, and 1.7 % severe; 56.9 % were in children ≤ 5 years of age. There were complications in 16.4 % of patients. Mortality was 6.4 %.
Conclusions: we observed an increased trend in frequency of head trauma in children. Most frequent injury was skull fracture and mechanism of trauma was falling from different heights. The most afflicted age group was that of ‹ 5 years of age.
