ABSTRACT
Background: Malnutrition in hospitals is a common complication that affects up to 50% of the adult patients. In the last decades, the prevalence of overweight and obesity has increased; probably the historical prevalence of hospitable malnutrition is being reverted. This study describes the state of nutrition of patients according to theirCMI when admitted to the internal medicine service of a public hospital in Merida, Yucatan.
Methods: Transverse study, observational, 15-year-old major patients who were admitted to the service of internal medicine during 2006 and 2007. The information was obtained through the application of a clinical-nutritious history. The Corporal Mass Index (CMI) was constructed with anthropometrics data and international parameters were applied for this analysis.
Results: Aanthropometrics data of 546 average age 63 patients was analysed, of which 53% (289) were male. The evaluation of the nutritious state based on the CMI showed that four out of ten patients had a normal IMC; whereas more than 10% (72) presented malnutrition. A high percentage of patients presented overweight; 29% (158) reflected a CMI established as overweight and 19% (106) presented obesity in its three categories.
Conclusions: The results of the study show that the effects of the nutritional transition are present in hospitals; not only for the increase of chronic-degenerative diagnosed patients but also in their body composition. It is necessary to update the intervention protocols.
