ABSTRACT

Objective: To make a retrospective review of patients treated for HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) carrier or AIDS in the service infectology service at the Sonora Children Hospital in 1994 thru 2007 period.
Material and Methods: We reviewed the records of 25 patients diagnosed with HIV carrier or AIDS, at the Children’s Hospital of Sonora. The variables considered were: age, sex, parental history, signs and symptoms, laboratory tests, treatment, the same undesir able effects and evolution.
Results: Of 25 patients, 12 were male and 13 female, age range between 6 months and 16 years old, 80% of parents did not know their immune status prior to the diagnosis of their children, 93% were infected with perinatal transmission. There are currently 8 patients in the control, 7 with treatment for having burnout syndrome at the time of diagnosis, 1 without treatment because not did have a criteria to handling HIV with antiretroviral drugs. The remaining patients, 5 died from pneumonia associated to sepsis, 1 by hepatic insufficiency, 1 for rhabdomyosarcoma and one more dilated cardiomyopathy secondary to VIH. Two were discharged by age and six were transferred to other services for a variety of causes. Finally a patient did not come to control after his diagnosis. Four patients did not receive medications because the gravity did not allow. Four patients were managed at the time prior to 1996 with one or two antiretroviral drugs alone. The side effects of drugs found were only minor problems of oral intolerance that improved with the change in presentation.
Conclusions: During the last 7 years the diagnosis procedure and terapeutic schemes showed a important improvement with Health National Programs.
