ABSTRACT
Introduction. Trypanosoma cruzi has a multiclonal constitution, a feature that influence in its biological, biochemistry and genetic characteristics. In this way the strains distributed in a country may have their own profile.
Objective. To determine biological features such as metaciclogensis
in vitro and
in vivo, parasitemia in mice and natural resistance to benznidazol in Mexican
T. cruzi isolates.
Materials and Methods. Five
T. cruzi isolates coming from different zone of Mexico (Nayarit, Guerrero, Oaxaca, Veracruz y Campeche) were studied.
In vitro metaciclogenesis was determined in LIT medium,
in vivo metaciclogenesis in infected
Triatoma dimidiata, virulence in infected Balb/c mice and natural resistance to benznidazol using blood stream trypomastigotes.
Results. The metaciclogenesis
in vitro was higher for Oaxaca and Nayarit isolates, whereas for the Campeche and Guerrero showed the lowest meataciclogenesis rate. But
in vivo the isolates from Campeche, Veracruz y Oaxaca had higher metaciclogenesis than Guerrero isolate. The parasitemia in mice was similar among of them with exception for Nayarit isolate showing low parasitemia. Natural resistance to benznidazol was above 50% in the five isolates.
Conclusions. Mexican
T. cruzi isolates here tested had different biological behaviour. The metaciclogenesis for each isolate differs
in vivo or
in vitro assay. In
T. dimidiata the metaciclogenesis was below 30% independently of
T. cruzi isolate.
