ABSTRACT
Purpose: to determine the prevalence of abnormal haematological findings in Mexican patients with active pulmonary tuberculosis.
Method: Transversal, descriptive and observational study.
Site: Internal Medicine Service from University of Autonomous of San Luis Potosi.
Population: Adult hospitalized patients with diagnosis of active pulmonary tuberculosis.
Procedures: The frequency of the diverse haematological patterns from hospitalized patients with active pulmonary tuberculosis where recorded.
Results: Abnormal haematological findings are highly prevalent in Mexican patients with diagnosis of active pulmonary tuberculosis. The more prevalent abnormalities where: mild normocytic and normochromic anaemia in 52% of patients, leucocytosis in 36%, neutrophilia en 47%, thrombocytosis in 51%, lymphopenia in 47% y monocytosis in 20%.
Conclusions: Diverse red and white blood abnormalities are frequent in Mexican patient with active pulmonary tuberculosis.
M tuberculosis infection should be considered within the diagnosis approach algorithm in patients with suspicion of inflammatory processes and unexplained haematological findings.
