ABSTRACT
Background: High blood pressure (HBP) is a public health problem; 70% of patients affected are from developing countries. Jalisco state(Mexico) has the fourth place in its national prevalence but there is no information about private institutions, main information is aboutpublic health institutions.
Objective: To describe general characteristic of HBP patients within a private hospital, and analyze them lipid profile.
Material and methods: Retrospective, observational and descriptive study based in the analysis of 56 clinical records of patients withdiagnosis of systemic HBP at Hospital Universitario Dr. Angel Leaño, in 2006. Systolic and diastolic pressure, anthropometric characteristics, and lipid profile of patients were collected.
Results: Aaverage age for both men and women was 53.44 and 60.26 years old, respectively. Systolic and diastolic pressures values were higher in men (157.5 ± 34.32
vs 143.9 ± 19.41,
p ‹ 0.05 and 94.27 ± 18.22
vs 87.13 ± 10.66,
p ‹ 0.05; respectively). Atherogenic risk index was higher in women with systemic HBP (3.21 ± 0.39
vs 2.82 ± 0.97,
p ‹ 0.05, respectively).
Conclusions: Our results suggest that levels of systolic and diastolic pressures in patients with systemic HBP are higher in men; they were similar in patients older than 60 years. In addition, index of atherogenic risk is higher in men, but will be similar or greater if women reach menopause.
