ABSTRACT
Introduction: Candida albicans has several pathogenesis-associated virulence factors; among them, the ALS family (agglutinin-like sequence) formed by nine genes that codify for cell-wall glycoproteins that have been implicated on
C. albicans adhesion to host surfaces. The aim of this study was to determine the ALS genotypes of
C. albicans isolated from oral or vaginal mucosa from non immunocompromised patients.
Material and methods: C. albicans was identified by multiplex PCR, and ALS genes were detected by conventional PCR. Fifty
C. albicans strains obtained from adult patients with oral (n = 40) or vulvovaginal (n =10) candidosis were identified.
Results: ALS6, ALS4, ALS3 and ALS9 genes were detected at a higher frequency on
C. albicans isolated from oral candidosis, whereas ALS1, ALS2, ALS3, ALS4 and ALS9 were found on all the strains isolated from vagina. Oral isolated
C. albicans showed 20 different ALS genotypes, whereas vagina isolated
C. albicans showed only 4 distinct ALS genotypes.
Conclusions: These results show the high variability of the genotypes ALS betwen strains of
C. albicans isolated from the oral and vaginal cavity of our patients; probably, the expression patterns of the genotypes ALS present in each candidosis may be different.
