ABSTRACT
Background: nosocomial infections are the main complications of hospitalized patients; the most effective way to prevent them is to know the mechanism of transmission and the practice of the precaution standards.
Objective: to measure the level of knowledge that the nurses have on Nosocomial Infections and their prevention.
Methodology: a prevalence study was done in a hospital institution. Nurses of all shifts and categories were interviewed in reference to their knowledge on Nosocomial Infections and their prevention, with a questionnaire that contained 60 items some of which were open and optional. An analysis was done using simple frecuencies, χ
2, Spearman co-relation and the Kruskall Wallis test.
Results: of the 146 nurses that were interviewed, 127 (87%) were female and 19 male. One hundred belonged to the morning shift, 16 to the afternoon shift and 22 to the night shift. The scoring of knowledge on Nosocomial Infections was 7.4, in the prevention 6.6, in hand washing 9.4, in the management of dangerous biological waste 6.1. The global score was 7.5. The highest score corresponded to the chief nurse with 8.01 and the lowest to the auxiliary nurse (
p = 0.003).
Conclusion: we can consider the level of knowledge of the nursing personnel as regular, therefore they need to improve their knowegde and training.
