ABSTRACT
Objective: To know the psychological and psychotherapeutic aspects related with the multidisciplinary management of obese patients subjected to bariatric surgery to achieve in them a better acceptance, evolution, and adaptation of the surgical process.
Setting: National Congress of Obesity and Metabolic Diseases Surgery of the Mexican College of Obesity and Metabolic Diseases Surgery (CMCOyEM, for its initials in Spanish)
Design: Review. Bariatric Psychology Consensus.
Material and methods: According to their experience and based on the vanguard published articles knowledge was shared to homogenize the psychological management of the obese patient. Because of the scarce availability of Bariatric Psychology studies, it was decided to elaborate preliminary guidelines for the care of the obese patient, which have been developed since the XIII World IFSO Congress (2008), the III Latin American IFSO Congress (2009), and, finally the XIV IFSO World Congress held in Paris, France, 2009.
Results: The review of the previously written information and the experience of the participants define as utterly important the psychological aspects of the obese patient, both during the pre-surgical and postsurgical periods, as well as the evaluation instruments related with the most common alterations. Follow up and support group for the patient in his/her surroundings must be permanent. The obese patient faces a series of significant events that have to be approached psychologically and psychotherapeutically.
Conclusion: Bariatric psychology is part of the integral management of the patient subjected to bariatric surgery, helping the patient to adhere better to the medical indications and to his/her new lifestyle.
