ABSTRACT
Introduction: Musculoskeletal injuries occupy se-cond place in surgical care at the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS); osteoporotic fractures are included. In Mexico, few epidemic references concerning osteoporosis exist; multifactorial con-dition of osteoporosis has been recognized.
Objective: Our objective was to determine the pre-valence of osteoporosis in women aged 40 years or older.
Material and Methods: The sample was composed of 654 women using outlying dual energy x-ray absorption densitometry of lunar forearm, a Pixi-X, Spellmah X 2608, manufactured in 2000). Risk factors were determined in a survey using a questionnaire. Contingency charts were constructed with resulting data to analyze probable associations between risk factors and osteoporosis.
Results: Results of the sample were as follows: osteoporosis in 16 %; osteopenia 41 %, and normal, 43 %; risk factors that showed more preva-lence aside from older patient age were the following: menopause without hormonal substitu-tion therapy; intake of pharmaceutical products and medical disorders related to osteoporosis; lifelong low dietary calcium intake, and consump-tion of products with caffeine.
Conclusions: Prevalence of osteoporosis in this group of patients is similar to that reported in other studies performed in Mexico. It is considered that outlying dual energy x-ray absorption densitometry is a practical and useful method for confirmation of diagnoses. One conclusion of this study is the suggestion to introduce intervention programs directed to modify the life-style of persons at risk and to prevent possible presence of osteoporosis in mature life.
