ABSTRACT
Aging is associated with changes in the physiological reserve of every organ and body system. These changes may be affected negatively if they are associated with poor nutrition, sedentary lifestyle, poor social and family networks, cognitive problems and inadequate control of chronic diseases. Elderly people may develop a state of vulnerability or frailty that increases the risk of disability and dependence if they are exposed to a stressful event such as an acute disease or an exacerbated chronic disease. Geriatric syndromes are common manifestations of disease in the elderly, reflecting the possible existence of multiple diseases, often overlapping and requiring a different management approach than in younger adult patients. The identification of functional decline, urinary incontinence, falls and delirium as manifestations of other diseases will facilitate the medical management at the three levels of attention and the acquisition of essential concepts of geriatric assessment for undergraduate students and postgraduate medical and related careers staff.
