RESUMEN
La evaluación geriátrica integral es la respuesta a las enfermedades que afectan a los adultos mayores y que pueden no ser detectadas en una historia clínica tradicional. Comprende un proceso dinámico y estructurado que permite detectar y cuantificar los problemas, necesidades y capacidades del anciano en las esferas clínica, funcional, mental y social. Parte esencial de la evaluación geriátrica es la valoración funcional, la cual evalúa el papel de las enfermedades en la dependencia para realizar actividades comunes. La detección y manejo oportuno de alteraciones en las esferas biológicas, psicológicas, familiares y sociales en los adultos mayores permiten desarrollar estrategias que permitan mantener su funcionalidad y buena autopercepción de calidad de vida.
