ABSTRACT
Several classifications have been proposed to establish toracolumbar spinal fractures in order to describe the bone and ligaments injuries with anatomical, treatment and prognosis purposes. Since the first classification, described by Bhöler in 1929, there have been many important contributions, but definitely one of the most popular classifications currently used is the one of F. Denis in 1983, which divides the vertebrae in three columns to locate bone, ligaments and neurological, damage combining the structural aspect and the instability degree. Another classification also used today is the one proposed by the AO that divides these injuries to those produced by compression, distraction and translation with its respective subgroups. Thoracolumbar Injury Severity Score (TLISS) is a recently submitted classification (2005) and has the same functionality as the previous one but it is expressed in points. The sophisticated techniques of diagnosis we have today allowed to describe in detail these injuries, and to plan efficiently their treatment and prognosis.
