ABSTRACT
Several factors have been studied within the ones that trigger asthma. These factors may be infectious, allergic and produced by exercise; as well as exacerbating psychological factors, such as emotions, stress and psychological factors, such as depression, anxiety, and panic attacks. The objectives of the present article are to establish the relationship between the psychological factors and the exacerbations due to asthma, to describe the prevalence of depression and anxiety in patients suffering from asthma and its impact over morbidity and mortality. Emotions are observed to be a precipitating factor for the disease, as well as depression, which presents the highest prevalence. All the aforementioned situations have an impact on the course of the disease, the costs of treating the disease, mortality and prevention. There is a model of autonomic deregulation, called Miller’s model, which describes the relationship among psychological factors, their repercussion on the airways reactivity of asthmatic patients, and the clinical expression. The present paper proposes that, in the group of asthmatic patients with depression, the parasympathetic-mimetic route is stimulated through the vagus nerve, increasing the airway resistance. The significant social factors are the socio-economic status, violence, passive nicotinism (tobacco addiction), and family as a decisive element in the control of this mentioned disease.REFERENCES
