ABSTRACT
Introduction: Henoch-Schönlein purpura (HSP) is the most common vasculitis in childhood. The renal disease is the most common complication and potentially severe, occurs in 25 to 40% of patients.
Objective: To determine the experience in treating patients with Henoch-Schönlein nephropathy (NHS) in the Nephrology Department of the Hospital for Children of IMIEM.
Methods: A retrospective, descriptive and observational study. We included all patients diagnosed with PHS, in search of kidney disease. Period 1 January 2003 to December 31, 2008. We used measures of central tendency.
Results: There were 226 records of patients diagnosed with PHS, of these 54 had renal disease and secondary NHS confirmed in 16 patients. Of these 15 continue their control by the outpatient nephrology and one destination is unknown. Nine (56.2%) were male and 7 (43.8%) female. The signs were presented at the beginning were: petechiae (100%), edema (37.5%), abdominal pain (37.5%), arthritis (62.5%). Nephrological diagnoses were: nephrotic syndrome 13 (81.3%), nephritic syndrome 3 (18.8%), two (12.5%) patients developed renal failure. The oral steroid treatment was 16 (100%), steroid boluses 15 (93.8%), immunosuppressive 9 (56.3%). The results to treatment corticoid 9 (56.3%), remission of nephrotic syndrome 13 (81.3%), remission of nephritic syndrome 3 (18.8%), renal disease remission 4 (25%). So far 14 (87.5%) with preserved renal function.
Conclusions: The diagnosis and treatment are very useful.
