ABSTRACT
Introduction: In Mexico we realize outdoor surgery campaigns (High number of cataract surgeries in a short period of time) through all the States of the Republic. Most of the time there is a report of the number of procedures but not of the ophthalmological characteristics of the patients.
Objective: To report the outcome and ophthalmic characteristics of the patients who were operated during a surgery campaign at the Ophthalmology Service of the Instituto Nacional de Rehabilitacion.
Patients and methods: 218 patients were operated by an expert surgeon following the clinical guidelines for cataract surgery of the Ophthalmology Service of the Institute.
Results: A total of 205 surgeries were performed. Phacoemulsification with intraocular lens implantation in 138 eyes (68 %) and extra-capsular extractions with intraocular lens implantation in 54 eyes (27 %). There were 13 complicated surgeries (6 %) that were resolved during the same surgery or in a second procedure.
Conclusions: Performing cataract surgery campaigns in a third level institution ensures a surgical success of more than 90 % in a short period of time.
