ABSTRACT
Objective: To describe the epidemiologic characteristics of first time patients at glaucoma services in three ophthalmologic centres of Mexico City.
Methods: Epidemiologic, observational and transversal study performed at the glaucoma service of three hospitals in Mexico City, where physicians applied a questionnaire to first time patients during the period between May 2007 and February 2008, to obtain the demographic information and diagnosis resulting from the visit. The results were analyzed applying descriptive statistics.
Results: We surveyed 1191 patients at the three centres. The following is the demographic data: 478 men (40.1%) and 713 women (59.9%) whose mean age was 60. Most of them were born and lived in Mexico City, followed by the State of Mexico. Most cases were classified as primary open angle glaucoma (40. 6%), followed by glaucoma suspect (17%), primary closed angle glaucoma (8.2%), neovascular glaucoma (6.5%), ocular hypertension (5.9%) and pseudoexfoliative glaucoma (5.7%).
Conclusions: The most common glaucoma subtype was open angle glaucoma; the mean age for this subtype of glaucoma was 65 years. The number of cases doubled in patients older than 60 years in open angle glaucoma and primary closed angle glaucoma. There was statistic significance between family history of glaucoma and open angle glaucoma, glaucoma suspect and primary closed angle glaucoma. We observed that the statistic association between diabetes mellitus and most of the glaucoma subtypes was not statistically significant, except for GNV (p=0.05). The prevalence of glaucoma in this study was 1.01%.
