ABSTRACT
Gastroschisis is an abdominal wall defect classically described on the right side of the umbilicus. The incidence reported is 1 to 2 in 10,000 births; however, in the last years there has been an increase in countries like Mexico. Left side gastroschisis is a rare defect, only 17 cases have been published in the literature. We report a case of a newborn with left side gastroschisis and a literature review.
Discussion: The etiology of the left side gastroschisis is unknown. Some theories have tried to explain why the defect occurs more frequently on the right side, it is traditionally considered a disruptive anomaly. Left side gastroschisis is more predominant in females and it has a stronger association with extraintestinal anomalies. We suggest this defect may be an embriological and etiological different defect.
