ABSTRACT
Antecedents. In the 70’s arose the procedures to preserve the extremities of patients with bone tumors. The aim of this study was to describe the functionality of nonconventional femoral and tibial endoprosthesis for children «RC-10» in patients with osteosarcoma.
Methods. Retrospective cohort study was done with 24 patients with femur and tibia osteosarcoma to whom was placed the endoprosthesis «RC-10» between 1997 and 2003. The functionality of the endoprosthesis was evaluated according to the system proposed by the Society of skeletal and muscle tumors, two and six months after surgical event. The results were analyzed with SPSS 13.0
Results. Fifteen patients with femur osteosarcoma of 6 to 15 years old; the functionality at two months was 52%; and at the six months 76%. Nine patients with tibia osteosarcoma of 7 to 17 years old; the functionality at two months was 49%; and at the six months 79%.
Conclusions. The nonconventional femoral and tibial endoprosthesis for children «RC-10», is good alternative of treatment for pediatric patients with femoral and tibial osteosarcoma.
