ABSTRACT
Background: Nowadays, obesity which is characterized by insulin resistance is directly related to metabolic syndrome. We determined the correlation between visceral fat mass measured by bioimpedance and other insulin resistance indexes in obese and overweight patients.
Methods: We reviewed of 55 files of patients who went to internal medicine consultation between January 2007 and January 2008. In all the cases we looked for metabolic syndrome by ATP III criteria, we also documented corporal mass index, waist circumference, waist/hip ratio, HOMA index, and measurement of the subcutaneous and visceral fat mass by bioimpedance. We reviewed the correlation between the visceral fat mass and serum levels of insulin, glucose, triglycerides and high density lipoproteins.
Results: We found a significant correlation between the visceral fat mass measured by bioimpedance and the waist/hip ratio (p ‹ 0.001), the corporal mass index (p‹ 0.001), waist circumference (p = 0.033), postprandial insulin (p = 0,047) and the presence of arterial systemic hypertension (p = 0.032).
Conclusions: This study demonstrated that visceral fat mass measured by bioimpedance can be used as a screening test for the presence of insulin resistance in obese and overweight patients.
