Serum concentration levels of calcium, magnesium, sodium, potassium, copper and zinc (mg/dl) in captive falcons: Red Tail (Buteo jamaicensis), Harris (parabuteo unicinctus) and Caracara (polyborus Plancus) at the zoo in Mexico City

Text Extraction

Blood serum samples from captive falcons were analyzed for calcium, magnesium, potassium, copper, zinc and sodium by atomic absortion espectrophotometry and flamometry. Six samples from Buteo jamaicensis (Red Tail), eleven from Parabuteo unicinctus (Harris) and twenty one from Polyborus plancus (Caracara), were studied. Mean Ca, Mg and Na concentration resulted statistically similar among B. jamaicensis and P. unicinctus, but different from P. plancus. Pottasium, copper and zinc concentrations were not statistically different among the 3 species. General mean electrolite concentrations in these three species were as follows: Ca = 28.98; Na = 86.5; Mg = 1.73; K = 1.42; Cu = 0.37 and Zn = 0.52 mg/dl.
